It depends on the logistics of your home and where the computers are located. There are pluses and minuses to both wired and wireless networks. A wired network will work the best when the computers are located near each other. For instance, if they are all in the same room in your home. A wired network maintains the Internet speed where a wireless network is a bit slower, although it is still much faster on Mediacom Online than DSL or Dial-up. The downside to a wired network is the wires. You have to run the wires and make sure that they are out of the way.
A wireless network will work the best when your computers are located a moderate distance from the main computer in your home or where you have the wireless router located. A wireless network is good for not much more than 150 feet or less depending on where the wireless router is located, make up of the home, walls, concrete, etc. Also, if you don't have wireless cards in your computers already, you will need to purchase one for each unit and it can become costly depending on the quantity and brand of wireless card you purchase.
If you don't want to worry about networking your home, let Mediacom do it for you! Mediacom is now offering a Home Networking plan. We'll hook up all your computers with wireless service for only $5.95 a month. Installation charges apply. Call 1-800-332-0245 or go to www.mediacomcable.com/internet_networking.html for more details.

In order to secure your Wi-Fi (wireless Internet) you will need to secure the connection through the router itself. The router has an IP address that starts with 192. You can find this IP address in the manuals and user guides which your received when purchasing the wireless router. Once you have access to the router settings, go to the WEP Settings settings sections and initialize the settings with encryption. Create a SSID name, a WEP name and it may (depending on the brand of router) give you a couple 10 to 24 digit alpha-numeric codes. The WEP name and the 10 - 24 digit alpha-numeric code will be required to be entered in on each computer that you would like access to the Internet via your wireless network. This way neighbors cannot piggyback off your Internet connection unless the crack your WEP name and alpha-numeric code. Each router is different so make sure that you follow the instructions that come with it.
